EWF Brings European Project Results and IAMQS Developments to ISO/TC 261 Meetings in Singapore

EWF
participated in the ISO/TC 261 Meetings,
held in Singapore on 18 September 2026. Represented by our Deputy
Director, Eurico Assunção, EWF contributed to the international
discussion on the development of standards for Additive Manufacturing
(AM), bringing together recommendations from European collaborative projects
and recent developments in professional qualification.
ISO/TC 261
addresses standardisation across the AM value chain, including processes,
materials, terminology, test procedures, quality parameters, data and design.
As a Category A liaison organisation to the Technical Committee, EWF
plays an active role in connecting industrial and research developments with
the international standardisation landscape.
During the
meetings, EWF presented recommendations emerging from three European
projects. Through R3-MYDAS, the
contribution focused on how standards can support reliable and traceable
remanufacturing. The topics discussed included common requirements for
repairing components through AM, assessing the performance of repaired parts,
using recycled materials and maintaining information throughout the component
lifecycle through tools such as Digital Product Passports.
The BUTTERFLIES project contribution addressed the challenges created
by introducing renewable materials based on chitin or chitosan into Additive
Manufacturing. EWF highlighted the need for shared approaches to classify,
test and trace these materials, as well as to qualify the manufacturing
processes in which they are used. This can help create the confidence needed
for the wider industrial adoption of bio-based alternatives.
Drawing on the
work of DILAPRO, EWF
also addressed how digital manufacturing data can support the qualification
and certification of AM components. The discussion focused on the need for
consistent and trustworthy digital records, traceable production data,
validated process monitoring and secure data preservation, allowing
certification decisions to make greater use of evidence generated during manufacturing.
Alongside
these project contributions, EWF shared the latest developments of the International Additive Manufacturing
Qualification System (IAMQS). Developed
and managed by EWF, the system provides harmonised qualifications for
different AM professional profiles and is currently implemented through a
network spanning ten countries. Presenting IAMQS within ISO/TC 261
reinforced the importance of aligning technical standards with the knowledge
and competences required to apply them consistently in industry.
EWF’s
participation reflects its role at the intersection of innovation,
standardisation and professional qualification. Bringing project findings
into international technical discussions helps ensure that research results can
contribute to common requirements, trusted qualification routes and the broader
industrial uptake of Additive Manufacturing.
EWF thanks the
Singapore Standards Council, Singapore Manufacturing Federation and SMF-SDO for hosting the meetings and for their excellent
organisation.
