The European Welding Community felt the need of interchanging views and experiences, and created the European Council for Co-operation in Welding (ECCW) with the participation of Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands and United Kingdom.
• EWF- European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting was created
• Membership of EWF enlarged with the participation of all countries from the European Community to the EFTA and Eastern
European countries.
• Guidelines for European Welding Engineer, Technologist and Specialist were approved
• First Authorised National Body – ANB was approved for Portugal, followed by Spain and the UK
• EWF Constitution was approved by Ministère de Justice in Belgium
• Commission XIV of IIW adopted the EWF Guidelines for Welding Engineer, Technologist and Specialist
• EUROJOIN 2 – Florence, Italy
• EWF Constitution was registered in Moniteur Belge
• Trademark of EWF and copyright of documents were registered
  • EWF Training and Qualification System enlarged to European Welding Inspection Personnel, European Welding Practitioner
and European MMA Welder
• Rules for the implementation of EWF Guidelines for the education, examination and qualification of welding personnel
• EWF created a Committee for “Harmonisation of Assessment and Certification of Companies according to EN 729 Quality
Requirements”
• 15 ANBs were operating the System and the total number of diplomas awarded reached 10.000
• EWF and IIW start discussion regarding the adoption of the EWF Qualification System by the IIW
  • Guideline for European MMA Welder was approved
• Guideline for European Thermal Spraying Specialist
• The first Newsletter was issued
• EWF membership constituted by 17 members from EU and EFTA countries and 7 Observers from Eastern Europe
• More than 10.000 diplomas were awarded this year
